A morning walk through Tetouan's souk, where the spice sellers, fabric sellers, and daily market have barely changed in a hundred years. You drive into the Rif Mountains after noon and get to Chefchaouen as the light turns to afternoon gold. One of the best first impressions of any trip to Morocco is walking through the blue alleys for the first time before the day visitors leave. Chefchaouen has a whole day to itself. Get up before 7 a.m. to see the medina at sunrise. The light makes every blue wall look like something more than color. Walk to the Ras Elma waterfall, where people wash carpets in the cold mountain stream. Around 10:00 AM, go to the souk and the Grande Mosquée square. In the afternoon, you can take a pottery class, watch a weaving demonstration, or go on a guided hike through the cedar forest above the city. Imperial Fes → Gateway of the Sahara:
The long drive south goes through the Middle Atlas cedar forests of Azrou, where Barbary macaques can be seen on the side of the road, across the plateau of Midelt, and into the Ziz Gorges, where the landscape starts to look more like the moon.
